North Carolina, November 10, 2024 — History was made this weekend as Joe Wong brought his much-anticipated comedy show Out of Place to Duke University. This milestone event marked the first-ever Chinese stand-up comedy show in North Carolina, bringing together a vibrant audience to celebrate humor, culture, and community. This much-anticipated event was expertly organized by ny& CC, with valuable contributions from Duke University Chinese Students and Scholars Association (DukeCSSA) and Chinese e Life, the event was a testament to the growing cultural tapestry of the region.

A Night to Remember

The evening opened with Teacher Mike, a popular YouTube influencer with over one million followers, who spent 13 years living in China before returning to North Carolina. Mike’s wit and charm immediately captured the audience, setting the stage for a night of hearty laughter and cultural connection.

The first official performance came from XiaoMeng Wu, the founder of Carolina Motor Company. Wu’s comedic timing and relatable anecdotes infused the show with a local flair, leaving the audience in stitches and perfectly warmed up for what was to come.

Adding a fresh perspective was Jason, a Duke University student pursuing a double degree in Economics and Psychology. His witty exploration of cultural differences between China and the United States struck a chord with the diverse audience. Through humor, Jason highlighted the quirks and complexities of navigating life between two worlds, proving that comedy is indeed a universal language.

The night culminated with Joe Wong taking the stage to thunderous applause. Renowned for his sharp observational humor and down-to-earth delivery, Wong dove straight into his experiences learning English as a second language, drawing laughter with every misstep and misunderstanding. His stories transitioned seamlessly into more personal tales, each one resonating deeply with the audience. With every punchline, the laughter in the hall grew louder, underscoring the power of comedy to bridge cultural divides.
