Joe Wong’s Comedy Tour Hits NC State: A Night of Unforgettable Moments!

Article written by: Ellie Cook

Thursday 3/6,  world-famous stand-up comedian Joe Wong was back in the Triangle, entertaining audience members with his jokes. Joe Wong, famous in China and around the globe, is known in America for his appearances on The Late Show and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and from his time roasting Vice-President Joe Biden on the 66th Radio and TV Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C.. Last fall, Wong visited Duke University and was so well received that he decided to continue his college tour. This event was hosted by NC State’s own Chinese Learning Society in collaboration with ny& CC (ny& Culture Connect).

The night kicked off with a trio of stellar guest comics. Duke University student Jason, who warmed the audience up with some light-hearted yet hard-hitting jokes about Confucius. Luckily, most of the audience seemed familiar with the philosopher, or else the jokes may have been confusing.

Next, Colin Brown, an NC State alumni and regular performer at Raleigh’s beloved Flying Saucer bar, kept the audience laughing until the final guest comic, Carey James, took the stage. James’s jokes touched on his racial identity, and while there may have been some jokes that made the audience unsure if they should, Carey’s humor made it so they couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

When Joe Wong finally took the stage, the audience’s excitement was palpable. Instantly, people were snapping photos, eager to document their experience of seeing Wong live. Wong obliged the paparazzi, even striking a pose with his arms above his head in the shape of a heart, eliciting laughter without even saying a word. The openers were exceptional, but the energy from the audience made it clear that Wong was who they came here to see. Wong’s performance was everything expected from a comedian with as much experience, and as beloved as he is. Throughout the show, the audience hardly stopped laughing. When the show was over, and the audience was filtering out slowly, they left behind an atmosphere of joy and communal delight in the auditorium. Needless to say, the evening was another entertaining success for Wong.

This evening's success was in no small part due to the collaboration of the organizers of this event. The host of this event was NC State’s Chinese Learning Society (CLS). Founded by Abby Labrecque, this student organization has been a driving force behind bringing Chinese learners and native speakers together on campus. In fact, the volunteers for this event were all members of CLS, and were crucial to the success of bringing Joe Wong to NC State.
